Especially for graduate students and postdocs!
Start your academic year off right by reading this extremely useful, practical and detailed explanation of the steps involved in journal article review and publication (“From Review to Publication,” Inside Higher Ed, Sept. 26, 2011) from Eszter Hargittai at Inside Higher Ed. Just as an aside, Inside Higher Ed is a great daily source for news, updates, opinion pieces, blogs and career advice (and jobs!) in the field of (you guessed it) higher education. The Career Advice section features a number of columns and blogs especially for graduate students, postdocs and junior faculty including “Academic Jungle,” (written especially for students in the science, technology, engineering and math fields) and other great columns. This piece, “From Review to Publication,” is the latest in a series called “Ph.Do” which aims to shed light on the implicit practices of academia, – concrete suggestions and practical advice for junior scholars and graduate students on succeeding through intelligent career planning and a better understanding of “the unspoken mysteries of academic professionalization.” (“More Than Merit,” July 31, 2009)
